Bonnie E. Carlson received her MSW from the University of Michigan in 1974. In 1980 she received her Ph.D. degree in Developmental Psychology and Social Work from the University of Michigan. Her research has focused on all types of family violence and substance abuse. She has completed studies on children of abused women and the effects on children of witnessing domestic violence; dating violence; a comparison of the effects of child abuse and witnessing domestic violence on adolescents; domestic violence victims with mental retardation; the health and mental health consequences of intimate partner violence; public attitudes and beliefs about domestic violence; the impact of sibling incest on adult survivors; substance abusing mothers in the child welfare system; and the trauma histories of drug-abusing women.
