BSW FAQ's
Who is eligible to apply for the BSW professional program?
Students who have completed the following requirements:
- A minimum of 56 semester hours (with a cumulative ASU GPA of at least 2.50)
- ENG 101 and 102 or equivalent (grade of "C" or better)
- The College of Public Programs required writing competence, computer, and communication courses
- The University required math course: MAT 114, 117, or higher
- Core Social Work courses: SWU 271, 291, 295, 301, and 310 (with a minimum GPA of 2.75 and a minimum grade of "C" in each course)
- A minimum of 240 hours of experience in human services (may be paid or volunteer)
What materials are required to apply for the BSW professional program?
- School of Social Work Application Form
- Statement of Career and Educational Goals
- Two letters of reference - must include one academic and one professional reference
What is the deadline for applying?
November 1st for Spring semester and March 1st for Fall semester.
When will I be notified of an admissions decision?
After your grade in SWU 310 is posted.
Who is eligible for the BSW Honors Program?
Students must be admitted to the BSW professional program and have a 3.5 GPA in all social work courses they may have taken before admissions to the professional program.
Students must also be admitted to the Barrett Honors College. Students can obtain information to apply by calling (480) 965-2359 or can apply online at http://www.asu.edu/honors/main.html. The Honors College reviews applications on November 1st, and the 15th of each month thereafter. Minimum GPA eligibility ranges from 3.25 to 3.40 depending on the number of credit hours the applicant has.
What are the requirements of the BSW Honors Program?
Honors college requirements include a minimum of 6 credit hours which includes a thesis. In addition, the student will take at least 18 credit hours of graduate social work courses in lieu of equivalent undergraduate courses.
What is Advanced Standing for graduates from the BSW Honors Program?
Students who graduate from the BSW Honors program and are accepted into the MSW program will only be required to complete 36 hours for their MSW degree. In addition, they are only required to complete one field practicum instead of two. Students who are exempt from or pass the waiver exam for all foundation courses (24 credit hours ) must still complete two field practicums and are thus not technically advanced standing students.
