Application Documents

PhD Program

Applications should arrive at the ASU School of Social Work by February 1st. To be considered for admission, your file must be complete. Application materials must be submitted to both the ASU School of Social Work and the ASU Graduate College. Materials required for the ASU Graduate College must arrive in sufficient time to meet the ASU School of Social Work’s admission deadline.

To apply, your should submit the following to the ASU School of Social Work:

  • A completed and signed application
  • A copy of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) results taken within 5 years of the application date 
  • Three letters of reference using the required form
  • Signed Standards of Professional and Ethical Behavior Form
  • A writing sample consisting of a 5-page, typed, double-spaced, social problem essay on a topic of your choice
  • Curriculum vita or resume
  • Optional submission of other written work: professional and or academic
  • For international students a copy of your TOEFL score: minimum TOEFL requirement is 550 (PBT) or 80 (iBT), appropriate visas, and documentation of a multi-year financial package
