BSW - Bachelor of Social Work
Admission Requirements to the BSW Program
The BSW program is divided into the pre-Social work major for freshman and sophomore students and Social Work major for juniors and seniors. Pre-Social Work majors are those who have declared Social Work as their major or have transferred from other universities or community colleges and have not yet been admitted to the major.
- Students may apply for admission to the Social Work major after completing at least 54 semester hours of pre-Social Work courses, 12 hours of which must be in core required courses: SWU 171, SWU 291, SWU 303, and SWU 310.
- A 2.5 cumulative grade point average is required, as well as 2.75 GPA in core social work courses for admission to the major.
- Any student with a "D" or "E" grade in a core social work course will not be admitted to the major.
- Students apply for admission to the major prior to November 1st and March 1st. If accepted, and all prerequisites have been met, then students may begin taking courses designated "Major Only" in the following semester.
- Application to the professional undergraduate social work program is separate from application to the University. Application materials may be obtained from the School of Social Work's Office of Academic Services located in University Center room 800, (602) 496-0800, social.work@asu.edu. These include an application form, guidelines for statement of educational and career goal, and two professional reference forms.
- A minimum of 240 hours of experience in human services is required. Voluntary, paid, and/or equivalent family/personal experiences may be acceptable.
Transfer Credits
Credit may be awarded for traditional course work successfully completed at institutions of higher learning as indicated by Arizona State University and the board of Regents. There are several qualifications:
- Transfer Credit is not given for courses in which the lowest passing grade (D) or a failing grade was received.
- While courses successfully completed but evaluated on nontraditional grading systems (e.g., pass-fail) are acceptable for transfer, some colleges at ASU may not accept such credits as fulfillment of graduation requirements.
- Credit granted for "life experience" by an institution previously attended cannot be transferred.
- Grades and honor points earned at other colleges and universities are considered for admission but are not included in the final computation of student's cumulative grade point average at ASU. A maximum of 64 semester hours of credits will be accepted as lower division credit when transferred from community, junior, or two-year college.
