MSW - Advanced Standing Program

Admission Requirements to the MSW Advanced Standing Program

Admission Criteria

  • BSW degree from a CSWE accredited program with at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4-point scale) in the last two years of BSW degree work (Jr.Sr GPA)
  • Demonstrated motivation to pursue professional social work education, to work with populations served by social workers, and to work with special populations of the Southwest
  • Evidence of successful work experiences in human services
  • Completion of one course in statistics and one course in human biology
  • Preference may be given to applicants with professional social work related employment, and with less than six years between the granting of their BSW degree and the current applications date


Application Procedures

All applicants must apply to the School of Social Work and to the Graduate College. The application deadline for the Advanced Standing program is January 4th.   Late applications will be accepted contingent on space.

ASU Graduate College Application Materials

Apply electronically to the Graduate College at www.asu.edu/graduate/admissions.   In addition, the following items must be submitted directly to the ASU Graduate College in sufficient time to meet the School of Social Work Admission deadlines.

  • Graduate College Application Fee
  • One Official Transcript from each institution where the applicant has previously attended. Transcripts should be requested immediately. Note: If you received your baccalaureate degree from ASU, you do not need to submit transcripts.

School of Social Work Application Materials

The School of Social Work application packet is "self-managed" (i.e. the applicant is responsible for returning all materials to the School of Social Work). Any packet which is not complete will be returned. The following items must be submitted to the School of Social Work:

  • Completed MSW Application Form and Advanced Standing Application Form (provided by the School of Social Work). Applicants must choose either the Downtown Phoenix Campus or the Tucson Component and select a concentration in either Advanced Direct Practice, Planning, Administration and Community Practice or Advanced Generalist.
  • Statement of Educational and Career Goals in sufficient detail to indicate compatibility with the educational objectives and capabilities of the School of Social Work (3-5 pages, typed and double-spaced).
  • Professional Resume that includes volunteer and paid work experience
  • Three references on the forms provided by the School of Social Work. These forms must be completed by the references, placed in a letter size envelope, sealed and signed by the persons writing the reference letters. All reference letters are to be returned to you, the applicant, and included in the completed application packet. At least one of the three required academic or professional references must be from your BSW field instructor, or from your supervisor if employed in a social work related job for two or more years. A combination of both academic and professional references is desirable. References from friends, family members or personal therapists will not be accepted.
  • Signed "Standards of Ethical and Professional Behavior Form"
  • All documents received by the School of Social Work in connection with an application for admission become the property of the School of Social Work. If the applicant is not admitted into the MSW Program within two years, the admission documents may be destroyed.
