MSW - Standard Program

Admission Requirements to the MSW Standard Program

Admission Criteria

  • Regular admission requires a 3.00 GPA (on a 4-point scale) in the last two years of bachelor's degree work (Jr/Sr GPA)
  • Provisional admission can be granted with less than a 3.0 Jr/Sr GPA under exceptional circumstances
  • Demonstrated motivation to pursue professional social work education, to work with populations served by social workers, and to work with special populations of the Southwest
  • Evidence of successful work experiences in human services
  • Completion of one course in human biology prior to commencing their first semester in the program
  • Completion of one course in statistics by December 31st of the first semester enrolled in the program or prior to registering for SWG 519
  • Either a liberal arts degree or a BSW degree from an accredited School of Social Work. Students with other degrees must have 30 hours of specific liberal arts courses

All applicants must apply to the School of Social Work and to the Graduate College.


ASU Graduate College Application Materials

Apply electronically to the Graduate College at www.asu.edu/graduate/admissions Arizona residents must also file an Arizona Residency Form (available online). In addition, the following items must be submitted directly to the ASU Graduate College in sufficient time to meet the School of Social Work Admission deadlines.

  • Graduate College Application Fee
  • One Official Transcript from each institution where the applicant has previously attended. Transcripts should be requested immediately. Note: If you received your baccalaureate degree from ASU, you do not need to submit transcripts.
  • If required, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) Scores. Test scores are required only if the applicant's cumulative Jr/Sr GPA (on a 4-point scale) is below a 3.00

School of Social Work Application Materials

The School of Social Work application packet is "self-managed" (i.e. the applicant is responsible for returning all materials to the School of Social Work). Any packet which is not complete will be returned. The following items must be submitted to the School of Social Work:

  • Completed MSW Application Form (provided by the School of Social Work). Applicants must choose either the Downtown Phoenix campus or Tucson Component and either full time or part time (applicants not selecting a preference will automatically be considered for Downtown Phoenix, full time)
  • Statement of Educational and Career Goals in sufficient detail to indicate compatibility with the educational objectives and capabilities of the School of Social Work (3-5 pages, typed and double-spaced)
  • Professional Resume that includes volunteer and paid work experience
  • Three references on the forms provided by the School of Social Work. These forms must be completed by the references, placed in a letter size envelope, sealed and signed by the persons writing the reference letters. All reference letters are to be returned to you, the applicant, and included in the completed application packet. A combination of both academic and professional references is desirable. References from friends, family members or personal therapists will not be accepted.
  • Signed "Standards of Ethical and Professional Behavior Form"
  • Test scores from either the Graduate Record Exam or the Miller Analogies are required for applicants with a Jr/Sr GPA (on a 4-point scale) below 3.0. If test scores are required, either self report the scores on the School of Social Work MSW Application Form or include a photo copy of your test scores. The official test scores are the only portion of your School of Social Work application packet that may arrive separately (test scores are good for five years).
  • All documents received by the School of Social Work in connection with an application for admission become the property of the School of Social Work. If the applicant is not admitted into the MSW Program within two years, the admission documents may be destroyed.
