Society for Spirituality and Social Work
The Society for Spirituality and Social Work was founded in 1990, in Ed Canda's words, "in order to create connections and mutual support among social workers of many contrasting spiritual perspectives." He further commented that the Society is committed to developing "innovative approaches to spiritually sensitive social work practice and education."
The Society has sponsored or supported
- national and international conferences,
- curriculum interchanges,
- workshops and presentations,
- a refereed periodical newsletter and…
- inclusion of the Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work as a membership benefit
These events and materials are designed to promote research, development of theory, and dissemination of best practices in the field. Gatherings have included experiential workshops designed to share a variety of spiritual practices and to engage participants in activities that deepen understanding of spiritual dimensions of life.
Dr. Ed Canda, faculty at University of Kansas School of Social Work, was the first director, followed by Dr. Robin Russel of Binghamton University. The Society moved to Arizona State University in 2005. Dr. Ann Weaver Nichols is the director and may be contacted at sssw@asu.edu.
Besides the national conferences and activities, social work educators and practitioners are encouraged to form local and regional groups affiliated with the Society. Their events and meetings will be publicized in the Forum. The Society for Spirituality and Social Work in the U. S. collaborates with the Canadian Society for Spirituality and Social Work on conferences and publications. Outreach to groups in Mexico is planned.
Activities of the Society are supported by member dues, contributions, and volunteer labor. We invite you to join if you do not yet belong, to renew your membership in the Society if you have not yet paid, and to encourage your university or agency to join, as well. General dues are $45 per year for individuals, $25 for students/retired persons, and $100 for institutions. Contributions beyond basic dues are appreciated. There is a link to the membership form on the web site. Members will receive the quarterly Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work (Haworth Press), the Society's periodical, the Forum, and reduced rates for Society conferences and activities. International members are welcome.
